Medan Chapter 6 (The Medan Markets)

Hey yall, 3rd December 2016, our last day in Medan! Yesterday was a very tiring day bcos of the traffic from Berastagi. You can read about by clicking here!

That morning we packed our bags and checked out from 'Worsema' Sederhana, hihi. Pak Nanang already waiting for us at the lobby. We had our breakfast first at the hotel cos it was still early. As usual, telurnya 2 butir sahajaaa . The food that morning was not good, to be honest.

Goodbye Wisma Sederhana, not coming back here again i think, lol. Today, our main point is to go shopping around the Medan market because my friends love to shop, :D. Pak Nanang drove us into the busy Medan city that morning passing by railroads and squatters, the true face of Medan. Our destination - Bika Ambon.

Bika Ambon, ready to go

What is Ambon? Its a traditional delicacy of the Medanese, sort of like a cake. I told Pak Roy in whatsap when i was arranging the itinerary that i would like to go to Zulaikha Ambon which is well known among Malaysian who traveled to Medan. But of course, being stubborn, Pak Nanang drove us to Rika Ambon.

Rika Ambon, located in Jalan Sekip, Medan Petisah

Ooolala, even for food, we dont get to go to where we wanted. Rika Bika Ambon & Lapis Legit is owned by a Chinese Indonesian family. They got lots of order i guess as when we were there, they were packing lots of it to be delivered via van.

There were 2 flavors, the original and pandan. But we were only be given the original to taste. I bought the pandan for Rp90,000 per box. The original is Rp70,000 per box. They pack it for us to be brought back to Malaysia. TIPS: Honestly, when u brought it back, it doesnt taste good anymore. The best to eat is when it is still hot, very delicious. When you reheat, it became hard. And dont keep it more than 3 days as it will be watery and expired.

Only me and Bella bought it, i guess the rest were not interested anymore. Pak Nanang then drove us to Batik shop near Pasar Hindu. Batik is a traditional fabric mostly and widely used by the people in southeast asia, mainly Malay and Indonesian.

Batik shop at Pasar Hindu

The batik that sold here range from low to very good quality. U can find literally all type of Batik here, the shop is soo big. They also sell the muslim men wear such as the songkok and jubahs. TIPS: The shop name is  Gedung Batik dan Telekung, Jalan Persana, Kesawan about 100M away from the entrance to Pasar Hindu. If you are good in bargaining, do come here. U can get a good quality Batik, especially classic batik (original) and Sarongs in a very affordable price.

the Batik on the right is called original classic batik, much more expensive that on the right, which is modern batik

Batik, Sarong and Songket

Sha, Jenny and Bella bought lots of it to give to their mums and aunties, the salesgirl even said Sha looks and talk like an indonesian artist, hihihi. (i dont know who btw). I saw an indian guy came in delivering stock of batiks, speaking in fluent Indonesia. I was like wow, that is really something. Medan is the only city in Indonesia with a number of Indian population. They came here during the reign of an Indian empire called Chola. They setup their villages and temple, Maha Mariamman is one of it. Thus, the descendants of em can be seen today living together with the locals.

Pasar Hindu in Medan

We wanna go to the Pasar Hindu to see whats in it, must be interesting to see. But Pak Nanang was already in the van asking us to get in, mehhhhh! grrr.  There were a LOT of souvenir and bag sellers outside the Batik shop my dear. They rushed their hands into the van to sell things, like literally throwing stuff in it to force us to buy.

Bella had the chance to snap this pic of em, see how they sell things??

I know u wanna make a living, but this kind of behavior made me feel very angry and annoying. One guy throw the leather bag to me in the van and ask for Rp200,000, like wtf!. I gave it back to him and said NO. U see, Pak Nanang know bout this and should do something but instead he just sit in front, and let them be. Total useless, haish. Sha said to Pak Nanang, that is not the way to do business, no respect at all and he just nodded. TIPS: Ask your Supir beforehand to close the Van door once you are inside. It will block em from 'harassing' you to buy their goods.

Jalan Perniagaan, Medan

He then brought us to one street called Jalan Perniagaan filled with fabrics, textiles and accessories stores. Along the street you can find any type of fabrics you want if you are into tailored dress.

The Malay call it Kerawang, you put this on the next of your dress, make it look grand

The beads!!!

U name i what type u want! sew it to ur jeans and dress

The accessories caught my attention, the fabric accessories. The addition you sew to a dress especially around the neck and wrists to make it look more grand and exclusive. This kind of fashion is very famous among Southeast Asian people. Trust me when i said, it is very cheap here. It will cost you at least 50RM in KL, but here just around 10RM. The design varies, lots and lots of choices. On top of that they also sell beads, you name it what kind and type of beads you want, they have it all!. TIPS: If you like to 'bedazzled' your jeans and bags and you want to collect various, rare types of beads, do come here! you will be surprised of the varieties they have and the price you can get for it. It also applies to the hijabista that like to create their own style of hijab! :)

We hop on back into the van after that. Jenny got info from a friend in Wechat, a Malaysian student in Medan that told her we can get lots of good cheap clothes and accessories in Pasar Ikan Lama. This place is not in our itinerary, but its very intriguing to know whats there. So we told Pak Nanang we wanna go there.

He was not happy, he gave lots of reason not to go. But Jenny said, we wanna go take us there. lol. He nodded and drove us to Pasar Ikan Lama. It was just around 10minutes drive from Jalan Perniagaan Medan.

Pasar Ikan Lama, Medan

We reached a very pack place of shops, stalls, carts! wow!. We started walking around, the road into the market is very narrow, packed with shop on top of shop, my oh my. TIPS: As the place is very pack, be careful of your belongings, if possible do not bring any valuables with u here like watches and jewelry.

carpets and prayer mats

Songket and Laces

The price? well u need to bargain as usual. You can find a 3 storeys shop selling the carpets and prayer mats here, the question is how to ship it home? haha idk. Beside that, lots and lots of shop selling brooches at various design and prices. TIPS: Wanna do major shopping? Come here first as u can bargain all you want! and the choices is as vast as lake Toba!

The street seller that follow you around to sell their products is a lot here! They try very hard to sell it to u and keep lowering the price while following you. That is really annoying honestly. This one guy in purple shirt followed us until we are about to get into our van, can u imagine?..my oh my

there see? purple shirt guy, follow us everywhere

He sell the aroma therapy oil. U can find it in KL but not  as cheap as the price he sell, bcos it is made here. So i bought 2, green tea and lavender. I wanna give it to my friend that love green tea so much, hiks. He was happy and leave us, but hey at least i got it at a very cheap price. The same aromatic oil sold in Paten Permatang Siantar bought by Sherry but at 30% higher in price. TIPS: If u like aromatic oil, medicinal oil and candles, this one might interest u and its very cheap, so why not ay? :)

I didnt take the photo of the oil, but this is the one, quite famous in Indonesia, smell refreshing!

As soon as we got into the van back, we closed the van door.  Cos we afraid the same incidents will happened. Pak Nanang then drove us to a restaurant for lunch, where we will meet Pak Roy, the owner of the Supir Company. I was asked by Pak Roy to pay the last day payment to him.

Center of Medan

We had our lunch in a restaurant called Kedai Ayam Penyet Cindelaras near the Raja Sisingamangaraja XII monument. Along the way here, there was a wedding in a nearby hotel. I saw lots of congratulations banner along the road, maybe someone famous i guess. What interesting was, the congratulations banner is not printed. Instead, the words was carved using flowers. I find it very interesting :).

interesting banner! made of flowers

The restaurant service was quite slow. I asked for a knife to cut the mango i bought from Berastagi and the waitress gave me a rusted knife, like hello..u want us to get sick is it?. We ate the mango just like that afterwards, haishh. Even the food arrived late. Luckily the Ayam Penyet is tasty.

Cindelaras Restaurant

Pak Roy the arrived and greet us. We talked with him for a while bcos he asked on our experiences with his Supir. So we told him the truth. He looked concern yes cos it is his reputation. But well, at least we have lots of sweet memories here. I paid the rest of the payment to him which is Rp400,000.

Pak Roy said Pak Nanang will bring us to a shopping center called Medan Mall afterwards since our flight was at 8.20PM. So after lunch, we hoped to go to the mall. But Pak Nanang was like 'the traffic will be bad bla bla bla'. It was saturday you know, so i doubt the traffic will be bad. He then stopped us at a store,a small mall called Ramayana.

In front of Ramayana Mall

We are just tired to argue with him, so we just go into this store to kill time. Its pretty much like 'The Store' in Malaysia or AEON. There was sale going on, so I spent my remaing rupiahs here. Got myself 2 pants for Rp150,000, pretty cheap!. Sha got herself some pants as well, for her dad too. Dania tried a few shoes, but none match what she wanted. After about an hour, we got back into the van.

lol same pose, but on the inside!

Pak Nanang drove us to the KualaNamu airport after that, and as i expected, no traffic at all!. We reached the airport in just around 20minutes. And it was still so early, not even 5PM yet. He was so busy answering phone at that time cos he wanted to meet someone. That's why he said there will be traffic to go to Medan Mall. Aiyaiyaoii, never again.

We just hangout around the airport, i wanted to find a postcard to send to Syl in France but seems like not even one shop in the airport sell it, they are no longer printing postcard i guess. The airpor is quite fancy u know, modern, cos its the main airport for Northern Sumatra.

Medan Airport, gate to North Sumatra

We checked in and our flight departed on time. We arrived safely at KLIA 2 at 10PM. Overall, I was not really satisfied with my trip time cos i got a wrong Supir. BUT, I had some great memories & experience is Medan & Toba!  XO
