Perth & WA The Final Chapter (Walk-periencing the City of Perth)

On our way to Kings Park & Botanic Garden!  - Read the first half of the Perth City experience here!

View of South Perth City from the walkway to Kings Park

Syl as our guide holding the Here app, we just followed him. The route does have 'bicycle' logo on it, hihihi. So we continued walking on the paved road along the river at first. The view of South Perth from here across the Swan river is breathtaking!

bike route!

There were few people doing some run that time on the route, cycling (of course). We also passed by a swamp with benches around it. Quite romantic if u ask me. TIPS: Be careful as well, as some of em cycling quite fast, so better to not walk in the middle of the route.

After the swamp, we need to go inside a small tunnel and then along the road. Hmm yep, a road with cars. We are crazy i know, blame it on Syl :P. We then walk across the road, using the flyover of course, hahaha. There were even some mums with baby on stroller heading to the park using the flyover, its like a shortcut to enter the huge park from this side. TIPS: If u plan to walk as well, there is a Flyover to the park for walking, so to cross the main road to the other side is safe, dont worry.

The tracks available

Reached the other side after around 10minutes of walking and we saw several paths called the 'Lovers Walk', awww (love is blooming ay?). It is separated into Jacobs Ladder, Kokoda Track and Botanic Garden. I wanted to take the Botanic Garden but based on the maps, Kokoda track will also leads to Botanic Garden and its shorter, so we decided to follow that path, straight at first going down the hill with sounds of birds chirping. The mums with stroller followed the Botanic path.

Kokoda walk is actually a memorial walk, it is a tribute to the bravery of Australian troops who fought through atrocious conditions and against vastly superior numbers in the Papua New Guinea campaign of July 1942 - January 1943. The fighting on The Kokoda Track was one of the vital elements of the Australian efforts in World War II.

the entrance to Kokoda track, it gets harder after

At the entrance there is a board explaining on the story of the path in Papua New Guinea being used by the Australian against the Japanese. As most of southeast asian people know, Japanese army invaded our nations around 1940's and caused a lot of atrocities during that era. They called the invasion as 'asian for asian' aimed to chased away the Europeans from southeast asian land.

the wildflowers near one benches we stopped at

The Kokoda walk is shorter yes but boy was it hard!. U need to climb the stairs to the top and not a short stairs ya know. I stopped several times with Sarah to catch my breath as it was very tiring and i wasn't wearing the right shoes for this. Also i was hungry, no lunch yet! (i did try to find any shop that sells sandwiches along the way but none, no cafe nope). Maybe my stamina is not good enough, Syl can climb it well i guess. Phewww, but i saw a girl climb it while running, damn girl u got a strong legs!. TIPS: If you feels like your stamina is not strong to climb long stairs (imagine a small version of batu caves alike), then better proceed to the Botanic Garden path like the mums with stroller (now i know why they chose that way!), not this one definitely. But if u like a memorial walk, then Kokoda track it is.

Kings Park and Botanic Garden!

We eventually reached the top and saw some families having picnics and kids playing, welcome to Kings Park and Botanic Garden! Along the path to the center is an illustrations of seeds that are planted in the garden such as Grass Tree . It was nice. Informative to educate the future generations on the richness of western Australia's flora.

into the park, with seeds illustrations

The view of Perth City and Swan River from the top of King's Park is really lovely. U will see the the 18 metre granite obelisk (cenotaph) honours all Western Australians who gave their lives in the service of their country TIPS: The state memorial of The Great War is the best place to enjoy the view of Perth.

The Cenotaph on top of Kings Park facing Perth City

There is a small cafe selling fast food here, thank god! i was so hungry. We lined up, the menu showed they have burgers, fries the usual. The line was quite long as well. When it was our turn, i asked for some waffles based on the menu, but the cashier said 'we only have hot food'. I was like 'i don understand'. So she said, 'we have hot food' while showing the menu on top. Then i understand, So they have the burgers and fries only, that was what she meant. They way she looked at me shows she doesnt really like interacting with me. Maybe its her personality, she was tired of the long queue or she just doesnt like non-australian, Oh well who cares, i just want my food. TIPS: To be honest, better just buy some food and have lunch in the park, its way more satisfying and save lots of money. :)

the cafe, courtesy of google btw cos i was so hungry, lol

We find our perfect spot to rest and just enjoyed our lunch. With the birds and the wild flowers blooming, it was a good day to just rest on the park.

tiredddd!

As we eat, a bird came and sing us a song, lol kiddin im not Cinderella. It waited for us to feed it, clever ay?. So i gave it a lil bread bits by bits. I think its a she and she have kids, lil birdie on the nest as she keeps flying back and forth with the bread i gave.

The bird that craves for the bread, i hope u got enough!

There were people hanging out, doing some running, couples sharing their love (ehem ehem). So do put Kings Park & Botanic Garden on your list if u plan to visit Perth!

Syl with his energy drink

After we had our rest, we walked to the Aboriginal Art Gallery, its a lil bit down from the memorial cenotaph. There is signboards so we just follow it. Down the stairs and voilla, the gallery is there.

the signboard to the gallery

The entrance to the gallery is free. They have various types of artworks from generations of Aborigines such as the Nyoongar. Based on their website, it is stated that "Aboriginal culture represented through art has been dated at over 40,000 years old'. The arts mostly are fauna shaped, painted with dots of colours. It is pretty interesting to learn about the Aborigines artist and their works. TIPS: U cannot take any picture of the arts and if you are interested, u can buy the arts and some essential oils from Lavender & Rosemary here. Australian heritage.

example of aboriginal arts, courtesy of google as u cant take pic inside the gallery

We leave the aborigines art gallery after around 15minutes. Our next plan is to visit the Blue Boat House! ahahahaha, i know its very typical of me. But i really like the small blue house from the pictures i've seen and i wanna see it with my own eyes, ihihihiks. There is no easy way to go there, so we have to walk from Kings Park all the way to Crawley. Yep the name of the blue house is Crawley Boathouse, now we all know :p.

We made our way there via some path based on Syl's Here app. Based on what i saw in google map, u need to follow Zamia path, passing by the DNA tower. We walked firstly via the main road. TIPS: Oh yes, if you drive a car, u can just park inside Kings Park. Thus, no need for you to climb the stairs and all like we did. But hey, we love challenges :P .

Sarah lead the way now, hihi

As we walked on the main road, we can see some 4wheel drive passed by, some people on bicycles as there are cycling path from here and some were running/jogging. From there, we walked into the small path inside the park. And it was before this route i saw the DNA tower! yeay.

The DNA Tower!, climb this to see the whole park!

There were only few kids climbing the tower with a car parked in front of it (also a 4wheels drive). We were tired to climb it so we just proceed on walking into the path based on Here app. TIPS: DNA Tower is the perfect place to see the Perth City. However, u need to climb the spiral stairs to the top. Its called DNA tower cos it does look like DNA.

It is not the Zamia path, but a similiar one, i cant remember the name. By walking thru this trail, it will lead us to the Crawley path which will then lead us to Crawley blue boathouse. Pheww, such a walk!. But the wildflowers along the trail is really pleasant to look at, red, white, pink, yellow!. TIPS: It is better for u to have a GPS to walk around this path as its very similar to each other, my recommendation would be the Here App as it doesnt require internet connection. Or u can use google map as well.

The wildflowers were blooming along this path

We then reached Crawleys Path means just few meters more. Over here we meet the cycling path again, means yes we cut the route short using the trails we took, bravo Here app!.

Once we crossed it, we can already hear the traffic on the main road down there. There is a stairs leading down the hill. Reached down, we saw the blue house across the road! Finallyyy!. after a long walk, i think around 20minutes or more, yawnnn.

So here's the thing, this is a main road with busy traffic and alongside it is gated houses and apartments (im pretty sure it costs a lot, haha). So to cross the 2 ways road was quite challenging as there is no traffic lights here. So when u see there's no car, u just cross it. Yes, like how it is in Malaysia, hahahahaha :P.

Syl crossed first leaving me and Sarah behind, aiyaiyai my boyfriend. Then we saw a couple in wedding dress also tried to cross the road. Ahhh they're gonna take their wedding photos there! how sweet <3 . So when they crossed, we crossed too!. Finally reached the other side, yasss. and there it was, the blue boat house with literally nothing around it, hihi. But, it look really good and unique ya know. A small blue house alone in the Swan River.

As we walked there, we saw 2 girls taking photos in front of the blue boat house. So we waited, well u kinda have no option as the bridge to the boathouse is small and u need to take turn to take a picture near it. Those 2 girls were korean based on the language they used. Behind us was the newlyweds with their photographer. My oh my those 2 Korean girls were a new level of narc. They took such a long time taking pictures from above, from below, from left, right, any angle, u name it. They saw we were waiting, but they kept on going, 100 selfies and wefies. The narcisistic 'value' is high on these two. I mean, me and sarah loves taking pics as well, but not with the 'dont care' attitude. Aiyaiyai, what have the new generations become. (yes im a grandma)

They finally give ways for us, i thought they never leave and maybe will sleep there, lol. But we gave ways for the newlyweds first. Come on, its their wedding (or pre maybe)!, such a beautiful couple. The photographer setup the camera & took the picture professionally and fast. I took a photo of the newlyweds from far cos they were adorable.

Wedding pic!

We look back and the Korean girls was stil there! They wanna go again for another round of pictures, my dear god. They walk forward in front of us and were also taking non stop pictures of the couple, again and again until the photographer himself look back, like 'huh?'. I mean come on, respect their privacy, they respect urs right while u were taking thousand of selfies. It was then stopped by the friend of the bride/groom (or wedding planner maybe). She said 'sorry thats enough pictures please'.  I look at em and gave the cold bitchy look, so they then went back behind us.

all of us are blue! da ba dee

We congratulates the couple as they were leaving and it was our turn then, wow all the walk and queue for the small boat house, hahahaha. When u think about it, its very funny. But the pictures do look very nice and memorable for us. It was a good experience nonetheless. With the blue water of swan river at the back, it looks like a poster or postcard. We took pictures for few minutes while enjoying the view and let the 'girls of narcisism' take over ...again, duh. Behind them was few other people queuing. TIPS: It was packed because the sun was about to set and it was the moment when the pictures looks amazing, so do come around 4-5PM to get a perfect shot, esp if u r planning to take ur pre-wed pictures!

Lil blue scarf? lol

To go back to the city center from here you can take the bus. We crossed the road to the other side and waited at the Mounts Bay Road before Wingfield Avenue bus stop. TIPS: You can look at the number is you want to be sure, each bust stop have a number written based on Transperth route. This way, you can be sure to catch on the right bus.

the bus stop at Mouns Bay Road-Wingsfield Ave

Our bus number is 950 and it will stop at Beaufort St. near to our hostel. The bus came around 10minutes after that. I hop on and asked whether it is the correct route and yes of cos it is, u can always rely on transperth :D. The fair was around 2 - 3 AUD.  I kept on looking at the bus stop numbers cos sometimes its hidden.

The bus passed through the main Perth bus station area as well and stop there to pickup more passenger. After around 10minutes, Syl said to get down around this place as he remembers the place. Oh well, we just followed cos i really cant see the number. Just looking at the road name. Our stop was supposed to be 12132 but we stopped at a different stop. No worries, cos it wasn't that far. Syl used the Here app and we got to our hostel just few minutes walking from that stop.

It was good to have some rest on the bed that time, cos all the walking that day made us very tired! .

That night, we need to see Wawa because we have some of our things at her house on our 2nd day (you can read about it here). So Sarah texted her and because she didnt have a  transport to come to the center, we decided to take the train to Leederville. I talked with Wawa on the phone to get the rough idea where the train station is.

We then get ready and went out, started searching for the train station. I know that its very near our hostel, cos i saw The Hive hostel map, it is opposite it. We pretty much end up in Roe St. and as we walked towards the station, there was this guy with his daughters stopped Syl to ask for direction to Northbridge. Syl then answered 'that is interesting because im French' . lol, hahahaha. That guy laughed. I then told him, Northbridge is just a straight walk from there.  See? he asked him cos he thought Syl is Australian, but he is not. Then he got the answer from a Malaysian, mmhmm *smirk!

The train station is not that far. From the road, But we need to walk on the horseshoe bridge pedestrian walkways. And then some stairs (there's pee smell here, aiyooo) and It will lead you to the 2nd floor where u can buy the tickets. There was some constructions going on actually at that time. TIPS: The Perth Train Station is divided by two, but its pretty much connected by walkway. The other one is called Perth Underground station. The underground station consist of 2 lines Joondalup & Mandurah while the Perth Train station have the rest of the lines which is Armadale, Fremantle & Midland, better not be confused of these two!. But there will be signboards to the platforms via underground walkway.

The entrance to the platforms

Of course, its already at night so the counter was already closed. Thus, we need to buy from the ticket machine. It wasn't that hard as the steps is written, it costs us around 5AUD for a return tickets. Perth - Leederville - Perth. To Leederville we need to take Joondalup line, so we need to walk to the underground station Platform 1. We did asked the security there on how to get to the Joondalup line (they will check your ticket near the before u enter the platforms).

train come i dunno its destination #sugababes

With the ticket, we got into Platform 1. around few minutes the train comes (#sugababes kih kih). It was only one station and we have arrived in Leederville! yeay. Wawa said, take the left exit and so we did. We waited for her across the road of the station, they have some chairs and tables here, i think its a cafe that opens only around daytime, meh.

Then Wawa came! yippie!. We walked with her to the center of the Leederville town. It was sooo different from Perth City! Lotss of restaurants and cafe and bar. People hangout along the road, its very happening. TIPS: the nightlife is here yalll, its here. If you wanna hangout at night, there is also a Dome here, come to Leederville!

Leederville at night!

We walked around along the road for few minutes to see where to have dinner. Various choices, there are some kebabs, some western, eastern delights, but we chose a mexican restaurant in the end. We looked at the menu and decided to go with a plate for 3-4 person.

It was a good dinner yes, i really like the nachos with the guacamole dip sauce, its made of avocados. It was sooooooo good, i must learn how to do it, hihi. Syl wasn't full, so he ordered some beef nachos add ons to the plate (psst yes he eats a lot :P hiks). Wawa saw me asking Syl bout that and she said to me 'he is a guy, of cos he eats more than this, just let him eat'. hihihihi.

Us in the restaurant

We talked with Wawa about her life in Aussie, bout some of our friends and people we know, pretty much gossiping ya know while Syl eats :P.  It was Wawa treats that night, awww thanks Wawa for the dinner! #lotsoflove.

Sarah with Queen of Leederville, hihi

After we had our dinner, well we need to go to Wawa's house to take our belongings which we left there on our 2nd night in Fremantle (click here to read it!).  We stopped at a convenient store first, called IGA. Its pretty much like a mini-grocery-mall and they have everything. Syl bought some water and Sarah some snacks.

IGA convenience stores in Leederville, u can find most things here - pic courtesy of Google

From there we walked thru the Leederville neighborhood, some sports center, It's a really nice neighborhood if u asked me and you feel save walking around it. We then reached Wawa's mansion, hihi.

We hangout at Wawa's house first, check out the make-up bags cos some brand like Nyx, is no easy to find it in Malaysia and Wawa use that. We took our things and some 'souvenirs' given by Wawa to me and Sarah, aww thanks again, million of thanks!. Before we walked back, i took a shower at her house, haha yep. Because i will be too lazy to take it at our hostel.

Leederville train station

Wawa walked us back to the Leederville train station and we said our goodbyes, dunno when we will meet her again. We took the train back to Perth underground station and it was already almost 11PM that time. So we head to our hostel for a good rest and packing, yes packing as we will be leaving Perth tomorrow!.

Kringggg! alarm goes on that morning of 6th October 2016. We got ready and checked out from the Hive around 10AM. We leave our bags in the store room there first as we wanna walk a lil to the centre. Based on our original plan, we wanna visit the Nostalgia Box. It is a 90's game museum that attracts game fan, like Syl, hihi. It features Super Mario games from Nintendo and others like Pacman. I include that in the itinerary for him actually and because its very near our hostel, around 6 min walk to Aberdeen St. (Aberdeen in Scotland is where Sarah boyfriend is from btw, hiks ko hadooo :P).

However, due to time restrictions and our shortage of AUD, we decided to not go. But hey, if you are a big fan of 80s-90s game, its a good place for you. More info about it here http://thenostalgiabox.com.au/about-museum/

Hence, we walked to Forrest place again, to get our coffee from 7eleven there, ehehe i cant live without caffeine, sorry!. Syl and Sarah bought sushis for breakfast, like whatttt. They are both fans of Sushi yes, me - no. no fan sushi no me-. We had our coffee and sushis at a bench here, same bench as yesterday, lol.

We then walked back to the Hive to collect our bags. We asked the hostel staff on the location of the bus stations to Perth Airport, to catch the 380 bus. She said we can take taxi to be faster, but of cos it'll cost more. To take the Transperth bus that we took from the airport, we need to walk to the Esplanade busport. So, we prefer that one. We sat down and 'here' app-ed the road to walked to, i google map it using the hostel's internet, hihi.

our last day in Perth

We with our bags, Sarah especially with her large heavy bags started walking to the Busport. It was a pretty much straight walk via Barrack street after the intersection near our hostel. When we reached the T junctions opposite Stirling Gardens, we were not sure which route to take. So i asked someone there (luckily he is an Australian) and he told me its just on the other side of the road. Thank you Mr. Australian.

The busport actually located behind the Elizabeth Quay train station, no wonder i didnt see it at first. It is very organized, i am amazed of the transportation system here in Perth city, its not easy to get lost here like seriously. There is a board with buses numbers and which terminal they stop. So the 380 bus will stop at terminal D7 stop number 12201 and we headed there. Up the elevator, down the escalator and we reached there. Perfect schedule, lol! TIPS: use 380 bus to cut the cost, the fare is just 4.6AUD per person.

the 380 terminal in Esplanade Busport

The bus arrived, we paid the fare and around 10minutes after that, it made its way to the intended destination. Around 40minutes after, we arrived at Perth Airport T1 :). We proceed to checked-in, everything went smooth. While waiting we went to the duty free area, Sarah wanna buy a perfume for Mr. Love. Me and Syl looking at some biscuits or candy that we can buy to finish the AUD coins.

We changed our AUD balance to RM here at the airport actually thinking we will got more compared to exchange it in KL, oh boy we were wrong. The charges alone is 12AUD!, Wrong steps, wrong steps. We lose more actually. TIPS: Dont change it here, we think itll be cheaper as it is their currency but nope, better change it in KL.

Sarah did bought the perfume, its cheaper here (for that one yes, its cheaper), and we waited for our flight to appear on the screen for boarding. But because Syl seats is on the front row, we boarded first. They divide into 3 lines and we were number 2. (how dare ya peeps separated me from me boyfie!, hihihihi lmao!).

When the plane ready to take off, the 2 seats beside me was empty, i was happy, hahaha. Means Sarah and Syl can sit next to me. Sarah seats was next to me but not on the same horizontal row. Once it took off, i went to Syl's seat, it was 26A if im not mistaken and he was already 'almost asleep'. Meh how easy he slept. So i wake him up and asked him to take his bags and follow me to my seats. Around him at that time was few white women. Darn it they looked at me with this weird face like 'why is this girl calling him'. Maybe cos i am 'ethnic' and Syl is white they think im a 'entertainer'. Erghh, watever, at least we can sit together, (over naw kan hiks).

Goodbye Perth!

We reached KLIA 2 around 11PM, Karsyah, my housemate picked us up from the Airport and Sarah waited for her boyfriend.

Perth and Western Australia holds thousand of memories sweet and bitter. It is the first trip i took with Syl and it was very exciting! See ya in my next post, safe travel everyboddeh!
