Perth & WA Chapter 1 (Journey to the Port Town of Fremantle)

Down Under!,
Nickname for Australia, I went there last October, Perth City to be exact. Perth is located in the west side of the country. It is the most separated city compared to the rest in the east (Sydney, Brisbane etc).

For AirAsia X they print the tix like this, not just tear it like AK,Q flights, hmm

We (Me and Sarah) bought this tix via AirAsia during promo (as usual of course), it was around 600+ return tix. Our flight was 9.40AM from KLIA2 on 1st October 2016. My housemate, Karsyah sent us to the airport that Saturday morning.

breakfast at OldTown first!

Oh yes, that guy in red shirt is 'someone special', ehh?.. haha #jangankecam. Some things have changed and i never expected it. I am gonna spare you guys the boring details about how i met my other half. But let just call him Syl. :D

We were early that morning, but because we were kinda ignorance of the time and i had to go to toilet etc, we were rushing to the gate. The security queue was quite long as well. Phew!. Luckily they were calling 'final call to Perth!' from the gate. So we got there and the immigration officer (its weird tho why there is immigration officer there, usually just AA staff) asked me 'sekali ke?' means am i boarded the flights together with Syl, and i said yes. And he was like, 'can u speak his language?' .. like huh?.. i just smiled, meh.  Sarah was behind us and the officer asked the same thing to her. double meh! . TIPS: Always look at the time cos the security queue can be unexpectedly long sometimes!

So we boarded Air Asia D7232 (It's Air Asia X so the code starts with D). Me and Sarah sit near to each other cos we're under 1 booking number while Syl sat far to the front cos he booked after. The flight was around 6 hours long. So, i think u should booked early for meal if you want cos the prices of food in AA now is expensive if you order on flight! . TIPS: for AA, prebook the meal so you can cut the cost.

We were given a declaration form for you to declare anything u bring such as food, cigarettes etc, so do bring a pen. TIPS: Australia is a very strict country, so what u bring u just declare especially food. Only bring food that is familiar such as Maggi, Nestle, Brahims and never bring something like 'sambal garing che noor' or other IKS/local SME products'\ as there is a high chance it will be banned from entering, they will confiscate it.

sample of the Australia declaration form

I declared 'drugs' cos i had some medicines with me. It should be fine, but just declare it to be safe. We arrived at Perth International Airport Terminal 1 around 3.00PM. Terminal 1 is for international, while T2 and T3 is domestic. So flying from KL, of course we will land in T1.

When we reached the immigration, they asked for the card and put some remark and pointed you in another direction. It seems okay, but there are other officers who will look at you from behind, i guess just to make sure you are no threat to their country, which is understandable. After we exit that counter, an immigration officer asked us for the card again, and asked why we (me and sarah) tick on drugs, and we said medicine and supplement and she said 'that should be fine, no problem'. She smiled and said 'enjoy ur stay' . So why i explained this in details here? - Cos it's important that u declare everything and don't be panic if they ask, just explained. Cos so far the officers were polite, no issues at all as long as u declared what's needed.

The way i write it seems like it was a long process, but no. It's just around mmm 10minutes or so. We walked to the lobby first. I wanted to buy the simcard from vodafone, cos from the website it is quite cheap, and i saw it in the airport too, same price. TIPS: If you don't want to buy the Wifi device, u can buy this simcard ( Vodafone is one of it) and insert it in one phone,  so it can act as a modem, tether it to be used for 2-3 people.

Vodafone at Perth Airport

But silly me forgot to bring one extra old smart phone for the sim, cos i prefer not to change my sim. So yes, mission cancelled. kikiki. Luckily there is wifi in the airport.

We walked outside to find the bus stop number 27464 for 380 bus to the city. As i stepped outside, my oh my i never thought it could be that cold. The wind for the love of god, was so strong that i lose my ability to plan and think for a while. I wasn't expect the weather to be that cold cos based on Perth website it's 19-25'c in October. But nope, nope nope nope, It was 14'c and drizzled! and the cold wind was crazy strong. I didn't have my jacket on, can u imagine. grrr. Running nose, that happened yes.

When i stuck, everybody stuck hahahaha lol. Cos u see there are 2 bus that going into the city, The Airport shuttle bus and 380 Transperth bus. The airport shuttle will cost you around 15AUD but the 380 bus is only around 4 AUD, see the difference?. How i know this?, simple-

TIPS: transperth.com.au - the most reliable website for public transport around Perth, It will state the journey time and cost from point A to point B. Use it to plan well!

I was so lucky i have Syl this time (katanyaaaa!). Because he come from places like this, he adapted to the weather quickly. He took a look at my itineraries and start looking around while telling me 'u should put your jacket on'. I still didn't at this time, hihihi

The problem was the construction around the bus stops, so we can't detect which one is the stop for 380 bus. It become quite confusing at first. I finally able to 'breath normally' again although my hands were shaking and went to look at the bus stop, and I saw the green bus 380 from far. I was like 'yes! '.

This is the supposed bus stand for 380, i got from google cos i forgot to take photos of it at that time

We waited for it to stop and walked there. It was the same stop as the airport shuttle at this time, next to it cos the actual stop for 380 is under construction, Phew!. I Hop on and calmly asked the driver, 3 tickets to Fremantle. And voilla it was 4.6AUD per person, damn that transperth website is 100% correct. The locals (Ozzie for Aussie) called the town 'Freo', it is the Aussie slang. Other than that 'Arvo' means afternoon together with few other words.

So, i reconfirm with the driver on the transit station at Victoria Park, and he explained to me and it matched my iti. I was so happy we got into the correct bus, moreover my itinerary is correct :). TIPS: 380 bus is green in color (Transperth) and it will take you to the city centre (with few stops) for way lesser cost (fare) than the airport shuttle (direct).

inside 380 bus
To Freo we go!
I changed to the jacket on the bus, Syl bought this jacket for me (which happened to be very useful! ) The bus have some limited stops thru some housing areas and shoplots. There were few school kids hop on and off. I kept on looking at the stops number, cos i don wanna miss the stop. Then, we arrived at a stations with more than 1 bus stops. I saw the sign 'Victoria Park'. Yeay! we're here at the transit station :D.

Us at Victoria Park Station!

TIPS
: Each of the stops at this Victoria Park transfer station have its bus number written on board, so look for the right one.

I found the stop for bus number 910 to Fremantle, based on my 'research' (Victoria Park Transfer Stn Stand A). Within minutes the bus arrived, so fast, nak selfie pun tak sempat tau!. lol. We hop on to the bus, showed the same tix to the driver (no extra fees as we have paid for Airport - Fremantle) and all the way it goes to Fremantle station. It was around 40minutes pretty much.

lil boy sitting alone on 910 bus, lol

The bus go thru Perth City on its way to Fremantle, we saw the Perth Arena from the bus. We reached Fremantle station around 4.40PM. The stop is at Fremantle Railway Station. It was soo windy in Fremantle that day!. Shivering, freezing.

Fremantle Railway Station, oldies sangat kan

But i really love the town, it looks so like 1900 harbour city. A guy and a girl approach us and asked whether we know any places to stay, hostels. Syl then said 'u dont know where you stay?' .. and hearing Syl's accent, that guy said 'bla bla france?' .. Syl goes 'oui' . and just like that Poof! there you go, they started speaking in French.

The couple were also from France, Syl told me, they're from south of the country. So we walked together 5 of us with Syl as our pack leader, hahaha. The good thing bout Fremantle is they have maps in each street, so u wont get lost. So don't forget to snap a pic of it. I already have our hostel's street name and Syl use its 'Here' apps to get us there. TIPS: Download the 'Here' Apps from playstore as u can use it even without internet connection. It will show you the road to your destination like any other GPS.

here apps, highly recommended

maps of Fremantle, yep 'you are here'
I know the couple asked about us when Syl replied 'no bla bla Malaisie', means Malaysia. So obviously that is me and Sarah, hiks. But what important is, the city is sooo classic like cowboy+harbour town! if you like this kind of town, trust me you will LOVE this place!. Not the cold wind of course, :P .

The road in Fremantle

One of the old church

The French couple followed us to our hostel, The Pirates Backpackers as they wanna ask whether there are still rooms available. We booked this hostel thru hostelworld btw.
TIPS: 2 easy booking websites for hostels is hostelworld and hostelbookers, its reliable. I booked with this site as well for my travel to Europe with Sarah. (U can read it here!)

The staff looked at us entering and said 'you guys looks like u just came down from a mountain". Lol, cos the wind was strong and the 2 french was wearing a jacket with hood on. Even for the Australian, it was unexpected, so it's not just us, kikiki. TIPS: If you come to Perth in August, September and October do bring a jacket, cos the temperature can drop to 7'c at night and the wind is very strong with a slight rain. (raincoat is a plus) It is not a tropical city regardless of what tourism websites say!

Pirates Backpackers Hostel, Essex St.

We showed our booking to the Pirates Backpackers (the name of the hostel we booked) staff at the counter, and she smiled and then started to mumble to herself. We booked for rooms with 4 beds, cos there's 3 of us, me, syl and sarah. So we wont be sharing it with lots of people, more privacy la uols (gitcheww).

The problem was, they can't give us the room for reason 'there's people staying here for long term'. I was like, huh? then why did u advertise it on hostelworld!?. You should just advertise the room that is available to be booked. Whats the point of booking then? oh dear, such a mood spoiler this hostel. Don't you check the bookings you received?

The bright side was the staff is kind and very helpful. But i still cant accept this kind of service. If i didn't book its fine, but i did. She then gave us the room for 6 people for me and Sarah and for Syl, the room for 8 ppl. This is stupid u know, we prefer to stay in the same room. She saw that we were deeply disappointed, so she said she will try to check whether she can move Syl to our room, the 6 beds room.

We put our bags first in our room and Syl in his room. My oh my it was quite terrible. It was soo messy, so unorganized, the window was not working and the bed sheet was dirty. I am not a choosy person and i've stayed in hostels before, but i've to say Pirates Backpackers is the worst hostel i ever stayed in.  TIPS: If you have time and maybe extra money, find another hostel! there's a lot more.

this girl is still smiling despite the 'unique' condition of the room, kiki

After few minutes of rest, we decided to went out for a walk and dinner. Before we went out, as we were walking, the staff called Syl and said, the guy in our room agree to change with Syl. So he moved his bag to our room. Well at least all 3 of us can stay in one room. That is good enough for us.

We head to Fremantle fishing boat harbour. Based on my maps, we need to reach the Marine Terrace (heading The Esplanade Park) first.

TIPS: Sometimes events are held in Esplanade Park, there is also a ferris wheel here. U can check the Fremantle activities available at the town websites (www.visitfremantle.com.au). I have pics of this place in the daytime, so u gotta keep reading for the next entries :).

We walked via the park towards Mews Rd. and turn right till the end of the road (around 7min walk).

The roads here was not really confusing, especially with Here Apps, it is easy. But the fishing boat harbour and the Bather's Bay stretched out along the coastline, at first we ended up on the wrong side. But it is walkable. The wind that night was so so strong. Again, I never expected it to be this strong and cold!. I cant stop my running nose, it was almost intolerable for me. Syl tried to make sure i put the jacket on correctly. (cos i wear my sling bag inside, hard to zip it hahah!). He said I really need to learn what clothes to wear and how to wear it right. Meh? rolling eyes (hihihi :P )

Me and Sarah tried to hide behind walls & buildings to avoid the wind, hahaha!. I think if i am a lil more lighter weight, the wind will blow me away, kikiki. We reached Kailis fish market, our place for dinner. It is located exactly beside the boat harbour and it's pretty. But the weather was not good, so nobody sit outside unless you wanna get sick the next day, :P.

The outside of Kailis

The fishing boat harbour, u can see the boats from here

The inside was packed with people, not even a place to sit. TIPS: There are 2-3 seafood restaurants in Perth, if you want u can also try Cicerellos and Joe's, near Kailis as well. One of the place that have good reviews is Little Creatures Brewing which is located inside an old brewing company.

full house at Kailis!

We waited for around 10minutes for a table to be empty. I 'guarded' our table by sitting down, hihihi and Sarah went to buy drinks for us while Syl queue for food. We ordered the seafood platter set with 2 fillet fish, prawns, squids, scallops, mussels and chips & salads for 49AUD. It can be served for 4 people. Sarah add on some crab chowder. TIPS: For muslims traveller, Kailis got certified halal, so don't worry. U can google it.

order here!
eating and studying the map to explore the town tomorrow!

The food was okay, but for me..hmm a lil overrated maybe?. Delicious yes, but not to die for. But if you come in group of 3 or 4, this is definitely worth it. Because we can't even finish it you know. But Syl keep forcing me to eat so that i can stand the cold. meh.. hahaha

The seafood platter

the menus
We walked out of there back to the freezer outside, lol. We walked around town and stop at a fireplace in front of a hotel, yes they have fireplace along this road, how classic is that. ( I was thinking, how much is it if we book here instead of Pirates), haha!. But the prices of hotels here is ridiculously expensive, so Pirates it is for us.

Fireeeeee, thank you for this! It keeps us warm, jus for a while, lol

2 videos up there showing how strong the wind was that night!, (but idk wheher u guys can view it or not cos via website seems to be okay, but with phone sometimes not.)

Sarah was like 'why is he running around' pointing to Syl who was running in circle at that time, hihihi. Its to keep warm he said. Well he did come from a cold country so yes. Fremantle town is not that big, you can just walk around the city. The roads are safe, and have its own charm, historic port town. TIPS: Fremantle was listed as 2016 must visit top 10 'Best in Travel' city by lonelyplanet! and i agreed!

This is actually a hotel, Esplanade hotel.
We stopped at a bookshop called Elizabeth. It have books from all genres, old and new. Quite fascinating to walk around it. There is this section called 'blindate with a book' where u buy a book not knowing the title, its a surprise!. For book lovers, do come here!

Sarah and the jungle of books, hihi

blindate anyone?
Walking around this windy city at night is refreshing. But it was getting colder n started to rain again, so we decided to go back to our hostel and rest cos i don't wanna have a fever the next day. By that time Sarah already remember the road.

Pirates backpackers plus side is that they have their cozy TV room, common room where they hangouts, a kitchen (need some cleaning) and the lobby with this table football in the center. The staff did showed us around (a simple tour) the hostel for us after we checked in, earlier that day. They have all the brochures and pamphlets about Fremantle and Western Australia in general for free in the lobby as well.

the lobby
The pamphlets i took, i always take pamphlets wherever i travel to.

I asked Syl whether he can play the table football or not, oh boy me and sarah got 'beatenup' so bad, hahaha. He is good at it. We did enjoyed our time a lil that night at the lobby before we head to bed. The wifi is good at the lobby but upstairs sometimes it got disconnected.

Click this link on youtube if you can't view he video up here!

I took a shower first, they have hot water and stuff, it was all good. But the window can't be shut, so sometimes the wind got in, worst is someone can take a peek. Not just the shared bathroom window can't be closed, same case with the room window and my bed was exactly beside it. When the wind blow, not only it got cold but it made this sound 'dum dum' . haish..

The locker is in the room, and it is big enough to put the backpack. I changed to sleep wear, with socks of cos. I jus wanna rest although it wasn't really comfortable. All the beds in the room was occupied at that time based on what i saw. But no one was there except for this one guy. He was reading a book on one of the bunk beds near the light switch. After a while he cover his head with the pillow cos he wanna sleep. Sarah was like 'kesian dia nak tidoq' hahaha. He wanna sleep we can see that.

He then asked whether he can turn off the light cos he have exam tomorrow. So Sarah asked him ' you are still studying?' . It turns out he is a student at one of the university here. He stayed in Pirates for the whole semester. The prices of room to rent here is unbelievably expensive so he chooses to stay in the hostel instead. I was like wow, the standard of living here must be so friggin high. He is Australian ya know.

Of cos he can turn off the light cos we were all busy with phones, lol. He said 'i thought u guys wanna stay up, so that's why i just read this book cos i can't sleep with the lights on'. Poor boy. We went to sleep as well, Syl sleep with me on my bunk bed (over tau! jangan muntah please, kiki) .He put some folded paper on the side of the window so it stop making noises.

I thought at least i'm gonna get some sleep. But nope, that hope was crushed. At around 2am some of the roomates came in, loud. And then someone knocked the door again and again 1 hour later looking for Hannah. "hi is hannah here?' . I can tell that they're drunk. And who the F is hannah?..grrr. After that i heard some screaming, loud laughter, a guy talking bla bla bla until I don't even know what happened anymore and felt asleep. Phewww. But IF you love to party all night long and drinks till late night, you might love this hostel. I am too old for this, hahahahaha :P.

Our plan for the next day is whale watching!. So, stay tuned to find out more! (adakah akan mengambil masa 2 tahun cahaya to write, kiki) - Read chapter 2 here!
